Why We Quote Every Option, Including the Cheap One

Most cabinet companies sell one thing. A refacing franchise recommends refacing. A custom shop recommends custom. A painter recommends paint. The homeowner ends up with three bids that are not comparable, each arguing for the service its author happens to sell.

We build custom cabinetry, we reface, we refinish and we install cabinets other people supplied, which means we have no structural reason to push you toward the expensive answer. On a typical kitchen we will quote whichever of those options genuinely apply and tell you which one we would choose in your position. Sometimes that costs us the bigger job. It is still the right way to run the conversation, and it is why our estimates itemize box construction, doors, finish, hardware and labour separately instead of presenting one number you cannot interrogate.

What We Specify, and Why

The parts of a cabinet that determine whether it lasts are the parts you cannot see once the doors are on, which is exactly where a low bid hides its savings. Our standard box is 3/4-inch plywood with a dadoed, captured back panel rather than particleboard with a stapled hardboard skin. Plywood holds screws, resists sagging under load, and tolerates a slow supply-line leak long enough for you to catch it. Particleboard loses screw holding power once wet and swells permanently.

Hardware is specified by published standard rather than by adjective. ANSI/BHMA A156.9 Grade 1 requires 100,000 tested open-and-close cycles, which at ten uses a day works out to roughly 27 years of service. Builder-grade hardware sold below that grade frequently carries no published cycle rating at all. Drawer boxes are solid wood with dovetailed corners, not stapled trays. Finishes are catalyzed conversion varnish or pre-catalyzed lacquer, sprayed and cured flat in a controlled environment, because a coating that cross-links chemically behaves nothing like wall paint brushed onto a door.

Built for Ventura County, Not for a Catalog

Working across this county means working across roughly a century and a half of construction. Santa Paula has one of Southern California's densest collections of vintage housing, with Victorian and Craftsman homes going back to the 1890s oil boom, where nothing is square and cabinetry has to be scribed rather than fitted. Camarillo's flats are mostly 1950s through 1970s post-war ranch and tract. Moorpark's Mountain Meadows is roughly 2,500 homes built mostly between 1987 and 1996, now hitting the end of their original cabinet finish life. Riverpark in Oxnard and Dos Vientos in Newbury Park are 2000s master-planned construction with builder-grade cabinetry that is sound but plain.

Those are five different cabinet problems with five different correct answers. The other variable is the air. Ventura County sits under a marine layer that deposits salt-bearing moisture overnight and bakes it dry each afternoon, and coastal building guidance is blunt about the consequence: salt air can strip the zinc off galvanized fasteners in months rather than the decades they are rated for inland. Within roughly five miles of the water we specify 316 stainless hinges and pulls and seal all six sides of every door. Inland, that budget goes somewhere more useful.

How We Handle the Part Nobody Advertises

The punch list is where most cabinet jobs actually get judged. Wood moves, houses settle, and a door that was perfectly aligned on install day can drift after the first properly humid week. Working out of a shop in Camarillo keeps most of the county inside a 30-minute drive, which is the difference between a same-week adjustment visit and waiting a fortnight for somebody to come back and turn a hinge screw.
